Salary: £38,000 to £46,500 FTE, pro rata where applicable

About the role:

We are looking for a confident, practical Data Protection Officer to support schools and academy trusts across the UK.

You will work directly with school and trust senior leaders, provide clear advice, deliver training, carry out audits and reviews, and help clients put strong data protection practices into place.

This is a hands-on, client-facing role. As well as providing advice, you will support information rights requests, communicate with data subjects on behalf of clients, contribute to Data Protection Impact Assessments and undertake proportionate compliance checks on processors and suppliers.

This role would suit someone who can build credibility quickly, exercise sound professional judgement and turn complex requirements into practical support for education settings.

You may bring strong data protection experience, strong education-sector experience combined with relevant compliance expertise, or a blend of both.

You will be part of a supportive team that shares knowledge, reviews complex issues together and values initiative, consistency and continuous improvement.

Role purpose:

To deliver SchoolPro’s data protection services to schools and academy trusts, supporting compliance with the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 and related requirements through independent, practical and proportionate advice.

What you will do:

• Act as Data Protection Officer for a portfolio of schools and academy trusts.
• Provide clear, practical and proportionate advice to senior leaders, governance bodies and staff.
• Carry out audits and reviews, agree priorities and support clients to complete improvement actions.
• Support Subject Access Requests and other information rights requests, including communicating directly with data subjects on behalf of client schools and academy trusts.
• Advise on personal data breaches, complaints, data sharing and other data protection matters.
• Support the preparation and review of Data Protection Impact Assessments, helping clients identify risks, safeguards and actions.
• Carry out proportionate data protection compliance checks on processors, suppliers and relevant data-sharing arrangements.
• Deliver clear and engaging training, briefings and awareness activities.
• Develop practical policies, templates, guidance and resources.
• Maintain accurate records, manage deadlines and escalate significant or complex risks.
• Build trusted client relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues across SchoolPro.
• Contribute to team learning, quality assurance and service improvement.

What we are looking for:

Essential

• Strong practical understanding of UK data protection law and information rights.
• Experience providing data protection, compliance or closely related professional advice.
• Confidence working with clients and senior leaders.
• Ability to explain complex requirements clearly and practically.
• Experience delivering training, briefings or presentations.
• Strong judgement, organisation and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage a varied client portfolio, make independent professional judgements and work collaboratively.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle.
• Ability and willingness to travel regularly to schools and academy trusts across the UK.
• Ability to attend our Gloucester office regularly, normally one or two days each week.

Desirable

• Experience supporting schools or academy trusts.
• Experience acting as, or supporting, a Data Protection Officer.
• Experience of audits, compliance reviews, information rights casework or personal data breaches.
• Experience supporting Data Protection Impact Assessments.
• Experience carrying out processor or supplier compliance checks.
• A recognised data protection qualification.

Working arrangements:

This is a hybrid role combining home working, client visits and regular collaboration at our Gloucester office.

We expect office attendance normally one or two days each week, with flexibility around team and client needs. Travel to schools and academy trusts across the UK is an important part of the role.

Because the role involves regular travel to client sites, applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a suitable vehicle.

We are open to discussing full-time, part-time, term-time and other flexible working patterns. Individual hours, working pattern and contractual arrangements will be agreed with the successful candidate.
